From Military Precision to Mobile Maintenance: Gavin Baisi’s Path to Fleet Technician
Gavin Baisi, now a technician at Western Branch Diesel’s Ashland, VA location, has successfully navigated his first year with Indel Power Group, culminating in his promotion from Technician Apprentice. Before joining Indel Power Group, Gavin was actively serving in the United States army. Upon his transition to the army reserves, he sought his first civilian job, seeking a career that would build on his existing skills with military vehicles. As a result, he applied for the Fleet Technician position at Western Branch Diesel.
His experience earned him an interview with Justin Caveness, Service Manager at Western Branch Diesel, who recognized his enthusiasm and willingness to dive in.
“Right away, I could tell he wanted to learn and wasn’t afraid to get dirty. He had some experience, but he still needed more for what the position entailed. I knew though that someone like him could succeed in our apprentice program,” says Justin.
In the Technician Apprentice Program, Gavin would have structured training and free access to the necessary tools to learn to become a Fleet Technician. Gavin accepted the apprentice position and started his training in April 2024.
Over the past year, Gavin has shown impressive growth. He’s now Allison warranty trained and proficient in performing preventative maintenance (PM) services.
His work often takes him out of the shop, independently handling fleet maintenance at customer sites, performing oil changes and inspections. Gavin found his niche in the mobile aspect of his job, traveling to surrounding areas like South Hill, VA; South Boston, VA; Manassas, VA; and Glen Burnie, MD to help with PM needs.
“I love being out on the road and the flexibility of it. Each day has its list of jobs, and I just go and do it at the pace that works best for me and the customer. It’s a nice working environment if you prefer to work independently,” says Gavin.
Looking ahead, Gavin’s goal is to become the most highly trained fleet technician within Indel Power Group. Currently focused on truck maintenance, including PM services and identifying follow-up repair opportunities, Gavin is eager to continue expanding his knowledge and skills.
